Why do SOME atheists/evolutionists devalue humanity?

I'm not really sure what a soul is. It's never been defined for me in terms that don't involve heaven. But I definitely agree that humanity, as a whole, is pretty accomplished. And I think that humanity on an individual level is more important that anyone gives them credit for.
