Why does my car make a strange clanking noise when I make sharp turns?

Every time I make a sharp turn or a fast turn, I hear a clanking sound and my steering wheel slightly jerks a little. The clanking is similar to a sound that may be heard when a rock shoots up and hits the bottom of your car. Could it be my steering and tie rods? Or is it possible that it could be something wrong with the differential in my automatic transmission? For the record I drive a 1999 Saturn SL1 SOHC 1.9L
