When was India founded? unified? one governance?

I am wondering was there one India before the European colonized India. I have only heard that there were many kingdoms when the Europeans arrived, which in turn became easy(important factor) for the Europeans to take over the 'whole country'. And thus prompting the kingdoms to unite and fight as one. Then I think to myself, thanks to the Europeans, India is that big now. I wonder what if the Europeans hadn't landed there, I can imagine a 6 or dozen countries in India right now.
